In Austin, there is no lack of thrift shops or vintage clothes. Sometimes, it seems like there is a drought everywhere else because Austinites bought all the good stuff. If you aren’t already buying second-hand, no time is better than now to start, as more sizes and styles are becoming more available.

Faire Sauvage Vintage is one such a gem located and curated in Austin, Texas and founded by Alayna Suber. Ever since she began thrifting in high school, Alayna became a queen of vintage threads, known for all her amazing outfits.

Faire Sauvage, which translates to “Make Wild” in French, was inspired by Alayna’s French-speaking father. Alayna’s style was inspired by her grandfather who often wore clothing that was very free and gender-neutral. When it comes to Alayna’s style curation for the brand, it’s all about the 70s: eclectic prints and bold colors.

“I got into sustainability from my family. They are organic and were farmers in Texas. We were hippie kids.” She mentions how her grandfather composted and learned all about farming from growing up in Oregon. So when he moved to Texas, he spent time with his family and taught them a very organic lifestyle. As her mom brought her lifestyle habits to her children, Alayna became self-aware about recycling and thrifting for example mainly because of being frugal.

Launched just last year in 2018, Alayna first started working with clients, but then started utilizing Instagram to build her brand. She started the brand to encourage ethical and sustainable shopping by providing a fun and fresh way to buy vintage goods.

Right now, her goal is to sell more in different shops and later down the road, take dead stock fabric, and create new styles inspired by thrifting.

This year, Faire Sauvage has offered its clothing at The Sage Soul, a cute trailer boutique in Austin, as well as the Laissez Faire, which was co-hosted by Passport Vintage and Piecology Vintage this past fall.

As a thrifting queen and expert, what are Alayna’s tips for shoppers? Of course, always buy second-hand, and spend time when you’re inside a thrift store to look for good fabrics. For Alayna, that’s the key to finding pieces you can keep forever.
