In NYC, Following the Fashion + Climate Conversation

Another season of fashion week has come and gone, but with this year feeling a bit more urgent and in tune to the larger climate conversation. Here in New York, with Climate Week running just ten days after the conclusion of NYFW, amidst global climate strikes and the UN Climate Summit, it was hard to ignore the role of the fashion industry in the context of the current climate crisis.
Despite the uptick in mainstream attention by larger luxury brands—i.e. Mara Hoffman completely opting out of NYFW and announcements of carbon neutrality by Gabriela Hearst, Gucci and Kering— it’s hard to say how serious or long-lasting these commitments will stand. While London, Paris and Milan Fashion Weeks followed, New York’s emerging leaders in the space, took to their own events—blurring the limitations between fashion, consumption and climate action.
